idyl-shaw-living-area-rugs.jpgYou know your room needs an area rug in it, but you are having trouble deciding how big it should be. While going bigger seems the easiest decision, you don't want overwhelm the room leaving your other decor muted. On the flipside of this logicchoosing one that is too small would be a waste of vital floor real estate.

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Size Area Rug

1. Choose an area rug based on how big the room is.

Going with a 5'x8' rug is typically an excellent choice for small bedrooms, offices or under coffee tables. 8'x10' area rugs or larger are of course great for larger rooms like dining spaces, master bedrooms, and family rooms.

2. Fit the area rugs to where they will fit under the four legs of a coffee table.

Many people oversize the area rug under a coffee table, but the truth of the matter is that a rug under furniture should just fit the length and width of the furniture. If you are trying to achieve a more informal setting, maybe if you have an accent chair to partially rest on the coner edge of the area rug, ad some furniture coasters to the legs of the chair not on the rug. This will give you a level sitting surface and remail aesthetically pleasing as well.

3. Area rugs should cover active seating areas around a dining room table.

When you are taking measurments for an area rug to go in a dining room, always pull the chairs out from beneath the tables ledge. Sit in the chair and get a feel for how far out it must be pulled to comfortable seat an individual. Now measure from the back legs of the chair in both length and width and add an extra 8" all the way around for the perfect dining table area rug.

4. An equal amount of floor around the area rug is essential to a great design.

We tend to go larger for rugs we really love, but an area rug is only as good as the room it is showcased in. You need contrast to really show it off, so make sure to leave an equal amount of visible flooring around the area rug to really make it pop. If you chose to get a very large area rug for the room make sure that there is at least a foot to a foot and a half of visible floor between the edge of the rug and the baseboards of the room all the way around.

5. When placing an area rug under a bed, always allow for walking space.

When you place an area rug under a bed, be sure that it extends 3 feet out from under the bed on all sides not against a wall. Not only will you get to see your beautiful design, but you will also enjoy a comfortable surface area to walk on when getting in and out of the bed.
